World Tsunami: A History of a Devastating Natural Disaster

Indonesia, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, created a more effective early warning system, following the bitter experience of the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami. The program included evacuation simulations and rapid information pumping to coastal communities.
This disaster case study also shows the importance of proper marine space management. Building arrangements, as well as reforestation of coastal areas, can provide extra protection against the impact of a tsunami. Research shows that ecosystems such as mangroves and coral reefs can dampen waves, giving residents more time to escape.
